Victoria Kjær Theilvig charts her own course as a transformational leader
By JOHN ROLAND LEGASPI
A transformational leader is someone who stands up for herself, believes in herself, and inspires others around the world to do the same.
With her golden locks and mesmerizing blue gaze, Victoria Kjær Theilvig is a total stunner. At first glance, she evokes the timeless image of classical beauty, yet her journey and message prove that Miss Universe today is about so much more than appearances. During the 2024 Miss Universe pageant in Mexico, the Danish beauty captivated the stage with a message of perseverance, self-belief, and transforming the past into strength—an answer that ultimately earned her the Light of Infinity crown, making history as the first Dane to win Miss Universe.
“The experience has been absolutely amazing—truly unforgettable,” Victoria shares. “Every day, I’m discovering something new: traveling, meeting inspiring people, and connecting with communities and cultures. It has all been incredible.”
Now, months into her reign, Victoria reflects on the whirlwind journey that has taken her across the globe. During her recent visit to Manila, the 21-year-old beauty queen and animal protection advocate sat down with GLEN Magazine to share her thoughts on the path she’s carving as Miss Universe.
Part of your job as Miss Universe is to travel around the world. What’s the most memorable stop so far? Each country represents something unique and memorable. For me, it’s not just about the place—it’s about the people. Every destination brings new faces to meet and new cultures to experience.
Miss Universe is not just a beauty queen. She is also a transformational leader. For you, how would you describe a transformational leader? A transformational leader is someone who stands up for herself, believes in herself, and inspires others around the world to do the same.
Do you have a transformational leader in mind that you look up to? Whenever I’m asked this, I always mention my grandfather. He came from nothing and built his way up. I also deeply admire my mom—she has been such a strong presence in my life, and I look up to her for everything she has accomplished.
What lesson did you learn from home that you continue to bring on your journey? To dream big and work hard for it. In the end, everything is achievable as long as you stay focused, put your mindset in the right place, and believe in yourself.
I came into Miss Universe with the mindset that anything was possible. It was important for me to let my true self shine through.
In your final answer, you mentioned turning something from your past into your strength. What is something in your past that you’ve turned into your strength? The way I see life. I didn’t have the easiest upbringing, but I used those challenges to fuel my determination to achieve greater things.
Is there a change you wish to see in the pageant industry? I believe Miss Universe has already come a long way. It’s a diverse and inclusive pageant. Of course, there are always small things that can improve, but today we welcome everyone—regardless of body type, age, or gender identity. It truly feels like one big family that opens its arms to all.
What does it take for someone to win the crown? There’s no single answer. For me, I came into Miss Universe with the mindset that anything was possible. It was important for me to let my true self shine through. I stood firm in who I am—my values, my rights, and my personality. I believe I won the crown by showing the world who Victoria is and by enjoying the journey. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and it’s something every candidate should truly embrace.
