Just in time for Halloween! From the Glendoran Archives... T he Rubel Castle has a graveyard. An engraver had a load of granite that he couldn’t use and Michael Rubel's liberation forces went on one of their celebrated reclamation missions and acquired tons of these polished pieces of rock. Most of the granite was used in paving the long driveway that cut a swath down the middle of the Castle property from the west entrance to the eastern boundary. Several of the finer pieces were set aside and laid out in a plot just south of the driveway. These were real headstones that for one reason or another were never used to mark the graves of the people whose names were put on them. Guests who tour the Castle grounds are taken through the graveyard and allowed to read the engravings. There are a couple of epitaphs that make one pause and wonder about the conditions under which these people passed. One such grave marker proclaims the passing of Lester Moore with the epitaph that reads “4 slugs from a 44… no less, no more.” And then there’s Maude “Auntie” Baxter with the inscription, “I told them I was sick.” Michael had a whacky sense of humor and he may have had these particular stones inscribed himself. Michael did commission some stones to be carved in honor of people and events associated with the building of the castle. |
