Old to New Glendoran
W
hen the ‘dream’ of a magazine first engulfed Ida and I, things were a lot different. First of all, computers were in their infancy and what they offered was little more than a fancy electric typewriter with limited storage. In 1982 the TRS-80 computer was being offered by Radio Shack. It had a word processing program that sounded like it would revolutionize the publishing business. We invested in one and thus began the saga of the Fracasse’s and the publishing of the Glendoran magazine.

Our first publication consisted of 40 pages and the cover showed the village of Glendora looking north. The subscription price was $20 per year for a few years until it was raised to $25 and it has remained the same ever since. Beginning copies were very basic in layout design and everything, and I mean everything, was done by hand. The pages, when ready, would be filmed by the printer and plates made to use on the printing press. The photos were turned into what was called ‘stats’ when
the screen dots were added. This was a very costly and tedious process and after a few years, we purchased a stat machine and I began doing the stats ourselves. This allowed us much more creativity as to size, cropping and availability and was a definite improvement being able to do it all ‘in-house’.

As the years went by, changes were made to improve the Glendoran. Page count gradually increased from 40 to 56 to 64 and to our present 80 pages. Our special edition each year, the Glendoran Youth Issue, was our largest edition ever published at a huge 144 pages!

We started with a glossy black and white cover in mid 1986 and shortly afterwards discovered we could use a process called duotone to make the covers more attractive. For our 20th Anniversary January-February edition, we went to a full color cover featuring a painting of the street fair in Glendora’s village. We took another giant step in late 2007 and added a series of full color pages. Now, in 2010 for our March–April Edition, we have chosen to take another leap and have converted the magazine to full color with glossy pages. It is exciting to see the continuous evolution from our first magazine to this stage of publication.

Please enjoy this new look, as you read about Glendora and Glendorans and your neighbors in upcoming issues. Remember, subscriptions remain at only $25 per year. Cover price is now $5.95 per issue.
Enjoy!
